Anastasia's Secret

Anastasia's Secret by Susanne Dunlap is about Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicholaevna Romanova a.k.a. Russia's last princess. Some people believe that Anastasia escaped the horrible massacre that befell the imperial family but no one knows for sure. It is said that jewels were sown onto the four grand duchesses' jackets and that the bullets from the Bolshevik soldiers bounced off of the duchesses like a shield. Over 200 people have pretended to be the grand duchess, the most famous being Anna Anderson. Susanne Dunlap's historical fiction has Anastasia fall in love with a guard named Sasha that she met when she was younger and survive that fateful night. I think Susanne Dunlap did a great job writing this story. She has also written The Musician's Daughter which I read a few years ago and really enjoyed as I have enjoyed Anastasia's Secret.

  1. I have never really gotten into historical fiction, but the story of Anastasia's Secret seems full of suspense and romance. Thanks for giving me some facts on the history, the story seems really interesting, that so many people tried to impersonate her. This is one of those great historic events that no one has a certain answer about, which I love. Well, it's probably not so great for historians. Thanks for inviting me Marth!

  2. Anastasia is of interest to many people as she was the princess who might have gotten away. The lifestyle she enjoyed, while she was royalty was as oppulent as any fairy tale could imagine.
I went to Anastacia's palace with Martha about 4 years ago. It was like visiting a gilded, gold, heavenly city complete with gold rooms in the Hermitage and malachite rooms of green jaded jewels. The beauty is lost to a degree when one realizes the grandeur style could not have been realized without serfs, and near slaves, breaking their backs to create it. This is, of course, what did lead to the Russian Revolution. St. Petersburg is the most beautiful city I have ever seen, third only to Paris, and of course, Chicago. I don't have much time to read but, Martha, I would like for you to tell me what happens when you finish the book.
